College Students Invited to Apply Now For Kansas City Opportunities Scholarship Fund

January 28, 2016 - KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI

College and vocational-technical education students whose permanent home is in Kansas City, Missouri, are eligible for scholarships through the Kansas City, Missouri Opportunities Scholarship Fund, Mayor Sly James said today.

“Higher education or technical training is a path to a better livelihood, a better life, better citizens and, ultimately, a better city,” James said. “These scholarships can ease the financial burden for students who need it.”

To be eligible, students must be a high school graduate or have a GED equivalent; be 17 to 25 years old at the beginning of the school term for which assistance is paid; and reside in a Kansas City, Missouri, household within certain income limitations.

The application deadline is May 1. An advisory committee of the the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation selects awardees. The Foundation will notify applicants of decisions by June 15.

Scholarships, which are funded from casino gaming operations through development agreements with Port KC, are awarded annually and paid by the semester when students meet academic and document requirements. The minimum scholarship is $1,000 per academic year ($500 per semester) and may vary.
