Mayor Sly James today led the City Council in discussion of two actions related to the minimum wage in Kansas City, Missouri.
Resolution 150908 passed 11-0 and expresses the intent of Mayor James and the City Council to support an increase in the minimum wage in Missouri. The council voted 7-4 to repeal Ordinance 150217, which raised the minimum wage in Kansas City.
The following statement on these actions may be attributed to Mayor James:
“I know today’s action will disappoint some, especially those who desperately need a raise. I understand and feel that very personally.
“It would be inaccurate and misguided, though, to construe this procedural action as anything other than a recognition of what Kansas City can and cannot do under state law.
“Today’s action is not a repudiation of the substance of the ordinance, or a statement against workers. To the contrary, I am committed to helping raise the statewide minimum wage.”
