Mayor James, City Manager Troy Schulte and the Kansas City Police Department announce details of Kansas City’s new curfew implementation plan. Yesterday, the City Council passed a new curfew ordinance aimed at keeping the city’s young people safe. Tonight a 9:00 p.m. curfew for all unaccompanied minors under 18 will be in effect in the Plaza, Westport, Downtown, 18th and Vine and Zone Rosa areas.
“The Council and I understand that we cannot just take away options for our young people. We must also provide alternatives. Kids are kids. They should be able to gather with their friends, hang out and play ball over the weekend. We just want each and every one of our young people to be safe. My thanks to the Parks Department for quickly working to provide even more positive programming for this weekend. These are the first steps of a sustained effort to reduce violence in our community. It will be a coordinated effort and I could not be more proud of Troy, the Parks staff and Board and our police department for working together to implement this plan,” said Mayor James.
Curfew Detention Centers:
Beginning this evening, Brush Creek Community Center will be the designated Curfew Detention Center for the southern entertainment districts. It will open at 8:30 p.m. each night and remain open until 6:00 a.m.
Aim4Peace will provide mentor support beginning at 10:00 p.m. No activities will be provided for any young person detained. Curfew violators will be separated by sex and asked to sit until picked up. The Kansas City Police Department will provide transportation to the Center and all processing support activities. Kansas City Parks and Recreation staff will keep the center operating throughout the night.
The North Curfew Detention Center will be the Kansas City Police Department’s North Patrol lobby.
Community Centers Open Late:
To provide young people a safe place to meet their friends, engage in activities and have fun this weekend, the Kansas City Park and Recreation Department will be opening the Hillcrest, Gregg-Klice, Aguirre, and Kansas City North Community Centers until 11:00 p.m. on Friday and midnight on Saturday with programming included.
Participants in activities at the Community Centers will be issued a wristband to exempt them from curfew enforcement as they leave the Centers.
