Grunauer represents the first Midwest venture for Chef Peter Grunauer, whose resume includes highly acclaimed former New York City restaurants Vienna 79 and Fledermaus, as well as a string of successful European ventures. Chef Grunauer’s family hails from Vienna, Austria, a European capital he loves and frequently visits, finding inspiration in the historic city’s deep cultural and culinary life.
In addition to sampling the latest restaurant and nightlife ventures in his native city, Chef Grunauer often finds the time to check in on another branch of the family business. The Grunauer family operates a popular and long-lived restaurant of the same name in Vienna’s artsy Neubau district; it has become a Viennese favorite, offering fine food in a casual neighborhood. Chef Grunauer hopes to bring much the same inspired Austrian cooking and atmosphere to downtown Kansas City.
Peter’s son Nicholas and daughter Elisabeth, co-owner’s at Grunauer, are veterans of the Kansas City and Vienna restaurant scenes and are excited to play a role in the creation of a true family business. Together, the Grunauer’s bring a passion for their heritage and broad experience in the industry, and they look forward to sharing their native culture with Kansas City.
The menu at Grunauer focuses on authentic representations of classic Austrian and Continental European cuisine, crafted with care from years of experience.
Traditional Weiner schnitzel and grilled sausages are complemented by traditional European comfort foods like Hungarian goulash, cheesy Cordon Bleu schnitzel and lightly-fried chicken. Entrees are complemented with an assortment of classic Austrian salads – potato, tomato, cucumber and lentil, as well as thick Pommes Frites or Spaetzle. Prime steak and fresh fresh are also available daily, and prepared to the highest standards. Entrees are presented in generous portions, with Sausage options incorporate the simple (Bratwurst and Frankfurter) and more creative (Chedder cheese, Chorizo, and Curry wurst are available), and come in orders of one or two with a generous portion of mashed potatoes, sweet red cabbage and fresh shaved horse radish. Sausage platters are ideal for sharing, or enjoying a simple, affordable meal of the highest quality.
Dessert offerings feature the famous Sacher Torte, a rich chocolate cake with fresh cream that is a staple of Viennese cuisine. Warm apple and cheese strudels are also available, along with light, apricot-filled crepes.
Chef Grunauer chose the menu with the intention of providing a sophisticated mix of Austrian and European staples, prepared simply, in generous portions at a reasonable price. One can eat as Austrians do, sampling fresh, hearty foods paired with excellent wines and beers.
Meats are provided by Schaller & Weber, a New York purveyor of fine European foods, and fresh local ingredients from the nearby City Market will be used whenever possible.
